A leading Democrat from South Carolina, U.S. House Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) joined other members of Congress in supporting H.R. 8 this week, joining the 231 other cosponsors on California Democrat Mike Thompson’s nasty Universal Background Checks. In a recent interview, Clyburn went so far as to say that this effort is just the “first step.”
In an interview with NPR, James Clyburn was sharing his thoughts on his own gun control proposal — a bill that would close what the left calls the “Charleston Loophole” by requiring ten day waiting periods on firearms purchase.
That’s when he let it slip, saying that expanding these waiting periods and other recent gun control efforts were, “a good first step,” but then he apparently realized what he’d revealed so he quickly moved on to talking about H.R. 8.
Clyburn went on to say:
“Enacting common-sense gun control measures is a priority for President Biden and this Democratic Congress, and this legislation is a good first step. A large majority of Americans, including gun owners, support universal background checks. This legislation is needed to keep weapons out of the hands of those who should not have them and save lives.”

Ironically, Democrats often point to the Parkland, Sandy Hook, and Las Vegas mass shootings when promoting universal background checks. Some will also point to the January 8, 2011, Tucson, Arizona, attack in which Gabby Giffords was injured.
But they never explain that universal background checks would not have hindered, much less stopped, any of these attacks. That is because those who attacked Parkland, Las Vegas, and Giffords all acquired their guns via background checks.
The Sandy Hook attacker stole his guns, so no amount of background checks would have stopped him.
First Big Vote Is Today!
Gun owners will remember that the House Rules Committee is holding a hearing today, Monday, March 8th at 10:30 am to decide whether to advance H.R. 8 for a full House floor vote. This bill passed the House in 2019/2020 session and is expected to pass the House again this time.
The bill has already gathered 232 cosponsors, as well as endorsements from every major anti-gun organization.
If passed, H.R. 8 would mandate that outlaw any gun sale that doesn’t first get approved via a NICS background check. This effectively creates a government database of gun owners — something that would be the real ‘first step’ Democrats need if they’re going to enforce any other new gun control laws.
How will they know who the new laws apply to, who needs their guns confiscated, who owns an AR-15…without a national registry of gun owners?
Gun owners’ best chances lie in stopping this bill in the Senate, where Biden has far less enthusiastic support.
