Chicago, IL — As the left topples American statues and burns cop cars to combat “systemic racism”, Chicago is experiencing record high homicide rates. Already one of the most violent cities in the country, Chicago has a new record of 18 homicides in a single day, police officials have said.
The day fell on Sunday, May 31st. According to Max Kapustin, senior research director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab, the Chicago Police Department responded to more homicide calls than any other 24-hour period since the 1960s.
Kapustin said the day was the capstone of what was the deadliest weekend in over a quarter of a century.
The Bodies Were Stacking Up But It Wasn’t Corona Or Racism
Cook County Medical Examiner Ponni Arukumar said that he was so overwhelmed with autopsies to perform on June 1st that he had to call in extra pathologists to help.
Ponni Arukumar said that his office conducted a total of 35 autopsies on that day. 15 were gun-related homicides.
“This is an unprecedented amount of homicides in one day for our office,” Arunkumar said in a statement. “The most I can recall in one day since I started here in 2003 is 10.”
Natalia Derevyanny, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner, said the victims ranged in age from 18 to 39.
Not Everybody Ended Up In The Morgue
The Chicago police responded to at least 73 shooting incidents between 6 p.m. on May 29 and 11:59 p.m. on May 31. Of those 73 incidents, 92 people were shot, including 27 who were killed.
That’s 65 other shooting victims in just over 30 hours.
The medical examiner’s office said it also conducted autopsies on additional victims who died over that weekend in Cook County outside the city of Chicago.
Meanwhile, at a May 26 press conference, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said the increase in shootings can be blamed on disputes between rival gangs, clashes involving the sale of illegal drugs and people “feeling restless after being cooped up for weeks” due to the Corona virus.
“The violence throughout the city on Memorial Day weekend was nothing short of alarming,” Brown said at the news conference.
