(Springfield, Missouri) – With the Pizza Hut where he worked just closing, 31-year-old William Hotop was concerned when a man began to break down the front door in an attempt to gain entry.

That’s when Hotop lunged for a handgun that another employee kept by the cash register. Seeing the suspect raise his firearm, Hotop opened fire in self-defense. The suspect also fired his weapon, and the two engaged in a back-and-forth gunfight.

“It was a good old-fashioned gunfight,” Hotop said. “I protected (Pizza Hut) like it was my home. I love my job.”

Eventually the suspect fled, and police have not been able to locate him. The restaurant does not have security cameras.

After saving the lives of multiple coworkers and securing Pizza Hut’s money, Hotop was immediately suspended while his supervisor was immediately terminated.

“I can’t believe that after I protected the store, I’m basically losing my job,” Hotop said.

Authorities are still searching for the suspect, while Hotop is still hoping to get back to work. Missouri is a Stand-Your-Ground law state.
